Set the Case Straight: No Makeup or Makeup at the Gym?

So what’s the deal? Should we carry makeup wipes in our gym bag?

I’m sure some of you might be just as curious as I am.

Summer is here - finally! And we all want to look cute in our bikinis, short shorts, and crop tops. If you’re like me, you’re probably hitting the gym after a long 9-5 work day. I usually come to work with makeup on and I’ll admit, I’ve hit the gym with a full face of it. Shame on me! I’ve heard it’s a bad idea to go to the gym with makeup on but I’ll be honest, I’ve never known exactly why. I’m sure some of you might be just as curious as I am. So what’s the deal? Should we carry makeup wipes in our gym bag?

I’ve done research and here’s what I’ve concluded:

The verdict

Yes, make up at the gym is a bad idea. BUT, sweating at the gym can actually be good for your skin. As you’re getting your perspiration on at the gym, your body experiences an increase in body temperature. This allows your pores to naturally open up and the moisture from sweat can actually help release toxins sitting on your skin. Sounds amazing, right? However, when you’re wearing makeup, sweat sits on the surface of your skin and prevents the release of those toxins. Yuck.

But there’s more: makeup traps sweat into your skin, which can cause irritation and tightness. This can result in dry skin and the lifting of blackheads and acne. It also congests your pores and enlarges them as you sweat. There’s tons of bacteria at the gym, so wearing makeup to the gym can also encourage the bacteria your encountering to cling and settle into your skin. As a result, makeup ultimately restricts your skin from being able to breathe, which is important when you’re body is increasing in temperature and releasing sweat. And now you know ;)

A few changes we can make:

A quick cleanse before you workout will go a long way for your skin - trust me. Take the day off with a gentle micellar cleansing water that will cleanse AND give hydration. Love this stuff!

Simple’s Micellar Cleansing Water cleanses makeup, dirt, oil, and impurities while unclogging pores. It’s made without artificial perfumes, dyes, or harsh chemicals and is good for all skin types.

If you want to get in a quicker clean before your workout, keep some makeup wipes in your gym bag instead.

Clinique’s Take The Day Off Face and Eye Cleansing Towelettes are saturated with gentle micellar cleansing liquid. They are perfect for the gym when you need a quick way to take off face and eye makeup without irritation.

Let's keep it simple.

If you’re like me, you might not want to be completely bare faced at the gym – and that’s okay! I found a way to compromise between wearing your makeup and keeping your skin healthy too. Keeping your makeup light can keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. Just because it’s not a good idea to wear makeup to the gym doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a little concealer and mascara ;)

Waterproof concealer and mascara will prevent any perspiration from running your makeup. Here are some I recommend:

Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara is not only waterproof but also sweat proof. Formulated, without parabens and sulfates, this volumizing mascara has an hourglass-shaped brush that makes lashes more luscious, curled, and dramatic.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-hour Concealer is a waterproof, paraben free, 12-hour wear concealer that comes in 10 shades to hide skin discolorations and imperfections. It’s easy to use and is thin enough to provide a buildable layer of oil-free coverage.

Top off your no-makeup makeup look by adding some of our very own Marrakech Liquid Gold Beauty Oil for hydration and a radiant glow. Not only will it give your skin the hydration it needs, but it will also soothe redness and prevent free radical damage for those days when your getting your workout on outside under the sun.
