I’m sure some of you might be just as curious as I am.

Summer is here - finally! And we all want to look cute in our bikinis, short shorts, and crop tops. If you’re like me, you’re probably hitting the gym after a long 9-5 work day. I usually come to work with makeup on and I’ll admit, I’ve hit the gym with a full face of it. Shame on me! I’ve heard it’s a bad idea to go to the gym with makeup on but I’ll be honest, I’ve never known exactly why. I’m sure some of you might be just as curious as I am. So what’s the deal? Should we carry makeup wipes in our gym bag?

I’ve done research and here’s what I’ve concluded:

The verdict

Yes, make up at the gym is a bad idea. BUT, sweating at the gym can actually be good for your skin. As you’re getting your perspiration on at the gym, your body experiences an increase in body temperature. This allows your pores to naturally open up and the moisture from sweat can actually help release toxins sitting on your skin. Sounds amazing, right? However, when you’re wearing makeup, sweat sits on the surface of your skin and prevents the release of those toxins. Yuck.

But there’s more: makeup traps sweat into your skin, which can cause irritation and tightness. This can result in dry skin and the lifting of blackheads and acne. It also congests your pores and enlarges them as you sweat. There’s tons of bacteria at the gym, so wearing makeup to the gym can also encourage the bacteria your encountering to cling and settle into your skin. As a result, makeup ultimately restricts your skin from being able to breathe, which is important when you’re body is increasing in temperature and releasing sweat. And now you know ;)

A few changes we can make:

A quick cleanse before you workout will go a long way for your skin - trust me. Take the day off with a gentle micellar cleansing water that will cleanse AND give hydration. Love this stuff!

Let's keep it simple. 

If you’re like me, you might not want to be completely bare faced at the gym – and that’s okay! I found a way to compromise between wearing your makeup and keeping your skin healthy too. Keeping your makeup light can keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. Just because it’s not a good idea to wear makeup to the gym doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a little concealer and mascara ;)
