How to: Build your beauty cabinet without getting overwhelmed

"Confession: I'm a beauty product hoarder"

I’m sure many of you know the struggle

Confession: I’m a beauty product hoarder. Do I really need 2 types of moisturizers and 4 different face creams in my beauty cabinet? Probably not - and I’m sure many of you know the struggle, right? ;) You know how it is… you find products you like, new products continue to show up and sometimes the beauty cabinet just starts to clutter itself! #relatable

Well, it’s time clean out that beauty cabinet. Summer is here and I’m here for it. Let’s make sure our skin is here for it too! Let’s declutter and get that skin right.

Here are my 5 skin care must-haves to help declutter and build your beauty cabinet (without getting overwhelmed):

We all know how good it feels to unwind at home after a long day. We like to put our hair up, get into the comfiest clothes we own, and catch up on our reality TV (btw this season of The Bachelorette is a must watch). It’s time to think about letting our skin unwind too! Make-up, excess oil, dead skin cells, and impurities collect on your skin throughout the day. A cleanser will help get rid of all that and encourage healthy looking skin. Using a cleanser will help the effectiveness of any other products you apply to your face. It will get rid of layers of dirt and grime and as a result, will allow for other products to better penetrate your skin.

Not only is it necessary to cleanse after a long day, but it’s also a good idea to cleanse your face in the morning. Why not start your day fresh faced? You’ll remove any toxins the skin releases during the night time and you’ll even prep your skin for makeup application. Another reason to not skip your morning routine. ;) Just like most products, you should look into cleansers that are right for your skin type. Dermatologists recommend foamy oil free cleansers for oily skin types and creamy cleansers for dry skin types. It always a good idea to steer away from cleansers with heavy fragrances and additives (If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, do your research on it to find out more). If you really want to get that deep clean, use a toner to remove any traces of cleanser or make-up residue. It will help with locking in moisture and shrinking those pores. Oily or acne prone skin will also benefit from using a toner.

Here’s a cleanser we like:

Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser

Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser is vegan, hypoallergenic, and awesome for all skin types. It’s paraben free, sulfate free, cruelty free, and is made with a blend of five skin conditioners.

Face Mask

Alright ladies, thrown on your robe and grab your wine. Let’s talk about face masks. I think we can all agree that putting on a face mask and letting it work its magic can be fun and relaxing especially when you have your girlfriends to do it with. I’m just going to warn you that the benefits will make you want to go put one on right now.

This is why we love them so much: Face masks really dig deep into those pores. They provide a deep clean to your skin and get rid of the dead skin cells around those pores to make them shrink. (Gotta love that.) Regularly using face masks can also smoothen your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They deeply penetrate to provide the skin with enough hydration to soften and enhance elasticity. These are just benefits that some face masks have in common. There are plenty of face masks out there that are designed to provide particular benefits for your skin. It’s a good idea to take a look at your own skin and think about what you might want in a face mask. Then, do your research.

Here are some that we are loving right now:

Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Exfoliating Clay Mask

Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Exfoliating Clay Mask contains salicylic acid and natural exfoliants to help draw out impurities, scrub away blackheads and shrink the look of pores. Leave the mask on for just five minutes and see noticeable results!

Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Treatment Mask

Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Treatment Mask is infused with Clary Sage to provide intense hydration and help increase skin’s ability to retain moisture. It also works as a natural anti-aging solution.

Moisturizer - The overall purpose of a moisturizer is to keep your skin hydrated and balanced. If skin is too dry or too oily, acne begins rising (yikes). Because our skin is constantly losing dead skin cells, it needs moisturizer to help repair and heal itself.

While we’re on the topic of keeping your skin healthy, let me tell you about SPF. Yes, SPF as in sunscreen. It isn’t just for a sunny day at the beach… it’s an everyday essential. SPF moisturizers protect your face from harmful UV rays, which can cause sunspots and early signs of aging, such as wrinkles. Dermatologists recommend an SPF of 15 or higher. We get it, you’re busy and the whole purpose of this is to not overwhelm yourself with too many products. What if I told you about tinted SPF moisturizers…Yes, a moisturizer, SPF, and foundation all in one. They typically have more humectants (a skin lotion used to reduce the loss of moisture) than other products, which will give your skin the hydration it needs.

So here’s some Tinted moisturizers with SPF that can help protect your skin from sun damage:

IT COSMETICS Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream

IT COSMETICS Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream is a full-coverage cream with SPF 50+. This CC cream is for all skin types. It’s ingredients include collagen to support skin elasticity and antioxidants to protect skin from inflammation and aging.

CLINIQUE Moisture Surge CC Cream

CLINIQUE Moisture Surge CC Cream provides Oil-free hydration and has a lightweight 100% vegan formula with SPF 30. Formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, it instantly color corrects redness and dullness.

Beauty Oil

Another essential for your beauty cabinet is beauty oil, especially for all my ladies out there with dry and sensitive skin. You may think that adding an oil to your skin will encourage oil build up and result in breakouts. However, this is not the case. Oils with healthy and beneficial ingredients will actually minimize pores, reduce irritation, and protect your skin from the everyday toxins it encounters.

Here’s a quick tip: Add a few drops of beauty oil to your everyday moisturizer for a radiant glow. You can even dap a drop or two on those cheekbones for a nice highlight. You’re welcome ;) It’s also helpful to keep in mind that a small amount of product goes a long way. Beauty oils can even be used for your hair to treat dry split ends, tame that wild frizz, and of course make your locks look shiny and luscious. #RapunzelGoals

Marrakech Liquid Gold

Formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, Marrakech Liquid Gold is multipurpose and 100% organic beauty oil made with a blend of Argan oil and Rose oil. Use it for your hair, skin, body, lips… use it however you desire and you’ll love it just as much as we do.

Night Cream

Keeping your skin hydrated shouldn’t stop just because your asleep! Using a night cream will help boost collagen in your skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and help even out your skin's tone and texture. When choosing a night cream, be sure that’s it not too thick. It’s a good idea to stay away from creams with fragrances and too many unnatural ingredients. While you do want to allow your skin to benefit from the product, you also want to let your skin breathe. Using a night cream is such an effortless and awesome way to wake up with radiant and soft skin. #iwokeuplikethis!

Here’s a few to start your search:

Juice Beauty’s Goop REPLENISHING NIGHT CREAM is formulated with certified organic ingredients, such as sandalwood nut oil to help increase elasticity as well as linseed extract and hyaluronic acid to hydrate, lift and firm. The formula works through the skin overnight to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and increase luminosity for a healthy glow.
