Summer is finally here! I’m sure we all want to look cute in our bikinis, shorts and crop tops. If you’re like me, you’re probably hitting the gym after a long 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. work day. I usually come to work with makeup, and I’ll admit. I went to the gym with a full face of makeup. Shame on me! I heard it’s a bad idea to go to the gym with makeup on, but I’ll be honest. I never knew exactly why — until now.
So, what’s the deal? Do we have to carry makeup wipes in our gym bags? I've done my research, and here’s what I learned.
Yes, having makeup on at the gym is a bad idea. When you begin to sweat after a few workouts routine, your body temperature increases and allows your pores to naturally open up. The moisture from the sweat will, then, help release toxins sitting on your skin. Sounds good, right? However, when you’re wearing makeup, the sweat sits on the surface of your skin and prevents the release of those toxins. Yuck!
But there’s more! Makeup traps sweat into your skin and can cause irritations and tightness. This can result in getting dry skin and creates blackheads and acne. It also congests your pores and enlarges them as you sweat.
There’s tons of bacteria at the gym, so wearing makeup can also encourage those bacterias to cling onto your skin. As a result, makeup ultimately restricts your skin from being able to breathe, which is important when your body temperature is rising and releasing sweat.
A quick cleanse before your workout will go a long way for your skin. End your day with a gentle micellar cleansing water that will cleanse and give hydration. Love this stuff!
Simple’s Micellar Cleansing Water removes makeup, dirt, oil and impurities while unclogging your pores. It’s made without any artificial perfumes, dyes and harsh chemicals. It is also great for all skin types.
If you want to clean more quickly before a workout, keep some makeup wipes in your gym bag instead!
Clinique’s Take the Day Off Face and Eye Cleansing Towelettes are saturated with gentle micellar cleansing liquid. It is perfect for the gym when you need a quick and simple way to take off your face and eye makeup without irritation.
2. Look for safe alternatives!
If you’re like me, you might not want to be completely bare faced at the gym, and that’s okay! I found a compromise that would allow you to wear makeup and keep your skin healthy. Just because it’s not a good idea to wear makeup to the gym doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a little concealer and mascara. Waterproof concealers and mascaras will also prevent your makeup from running or smearing.
Here are some waterproof products I recommend:
Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara is not only waterproof, but it is sweat proof. Formulated without parabens and sulfates, this volumizing mascara has an hourglass-shaped brush that makes your lashes more luscious, curled and dramatic.
Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-Hour Concealer is a waterproof, paraben free, longwear concealer that comes in 10 different shades to hide all skin discolorations and imperfections. It’s easy to use and is thin enough for buildable coverage.
Top off your no-makeup makeup look by adding our very own Marrakech Liquid Gold beauty oil for extra hydration and radiant glow. Not only will this product give your skin the hydration it needs, but it will also soothe redness and prevent free radical damage for those days when you’re getting your workout on under the sun.
