In the ever-developing world of skincare and beauty products, it can be easy to get lost in never-ending ingredient lists. Product after product seems to be full of synthetic chemicals and words that are just too hard to pronounce (let alone spell).
So how do we find products we can trust? How do we know what ingredients really are good for our skin?
This is where natural, hard working ingredients come in. One such ingredient is caffeine (yes, that caffeine).
Topical caffeine products are proven to be incredibly beneficial to improving the appearance of your under eyes. These products work to ‘wake up’ your skin, just as caffeinated drinks work to wake you up every morning. Here’s how:
Topical caffeine is vasoconstrictive - it works by constricting blood vessels. Since the skin around the eye is thin, the caffeine is able to softly penetrate the top layers of the skin and push the blood back into the circulatory system. Ultimately, this serves to lessen the redness and reverse the puffiness that may build up under your eyes.
While caffeinated products are perfect to reduce the look of puffiness around the eyes, they're not the ultimate solution to dark circles. Often, dark circles can be due to hereditary factors - so a product itself cannot change them. Nevertheless, the anti-inflammatory properties of topical caffeine work to combat the redness and decolorization common to dark circles. When applied daily, such products can still work to lessen the appearance of puffiness, even if they can’t completely reverse it.
Along with being vasoconstrictive, topical caffeine is an antioxidant. When applied to your skin, antioxidants combat the impurities caused by oxidative stress. In other words, they promote the production of collagen, which essentially works to heal the wounds on your skin. This increase in collagen lessens the appearance of aging on your skin. As such, topical caffeine reduces the appearance of wrinkles and tightens the skin around your eye.
This tightening effect then serves to brighten the skin under your eyes. Your eyes are the focal point of your face, so a bright under-eye area brightens the overall look of your face and makes your skin appear fresh and dewy. That's why caffeinated products are said to ‘wake up’ your under eye, and are often recommended for daily morning usage.
